What is an FUE hair transplant?

In FUE, the surgeon removes follicular units, natural groups of one to four hairs, one at a time from the donor area at the back and sides of the head, using a micro-punch usually 0.7 to 1 mm wide. The grafts are kept cool and then implanted into small channels opened in the recipient area.

Because each graft comes out through its own tiny hole, FUE leaves scattered dot scars that are hard to see once the hair grows back, instead of the single linear scar of the older strip method (FUT). That is the main reason FUE replaced FUT in most clinics.

How is FUE performed?

  1. Planning: the hairline and the number of grafts are agreed, usually after a photo assessment.
  2. Preparation: the donor area, and usually the recipient area, is shaved, and both are numbed with local anaesthetic.
  3. Extraction: grafts are removed one by one with a manual or motorised micro-punch.
  4. Channels: small incisions are opened in the recipient area with steel or sapphire blades, setting the angle and direction of the new hair.
  5. Implantation: grafts are placed into the channels with fine forceps. A typical session takes 6 to 8 hours.

Who is FUE for?

FUE suits most men with pattern hair loss who have a healthy donor area, and it handles large sessions well, so it is the usual choice when many grafts are needed.

It is less suited if the donor area is weak or very limited, if you cannot shave (unshaven and DHI options exist for that), or if the hair loss is diffuse rather than pattern-based, in which case a transplant may not be the right treatment at all.

Frequently asked questions

Is FUE painful?

The local anaesthetic injections at the start are the uncomfortable part; after that most patients feel pressure rather than pain. The first 2 to 3 days afterwards are sore and tight, and prescribed painkillers usually cover it.

Does FUE leave scars?

It leaves many tiny dot scars in the donor area. With hair longer than a very short buzz cut they are usually not visible. Very large or repeated sessions can thin the donor area noticeably, which is why the graft number needs a realistic plan.

How many grafts can be transplanted with FUE?

It depends on the donor area. The clinics in our database typically quote 2,000 to 4,000 grafts per session; a clinic that promises far more without examining your donor area is a warning sign.

What is the difference between FUE and FUT?

FUT removes a strip of scalp and divides it into grafts, leaving a linear scar; FUE removes grafts one by one. Only 9 of the 100 clinics we review list FUT, so FUE is the default in Turkey.

Are FUE results permanent?

Grafts come from the back of the head, where hair is genetically resistant to the hormone behind pattern hair loss, so transplanted hair usually lasts. The native hair around it can keep thinning, which is why some patients also use medication.
