What is a DHI hair transplant?

DHI uses the same extraction as FUE: grafts are removed one by one from the donor area with a micro-punch. The difference is how they go in. Each graft is loaded into a Choi implanter pen, a hollow needle that makes the incision and implants the graft at the same moment, instead of the surgeon opening all the channels first and placing the grafts afterwards with forceps.

The pen gives close control over the angle, depth and direction of each graft, and because no channels are opened in advance, grafts can be placed between existing hairs, often without shaving the recipient area.

How is DHI performed?

  1. Planning: the hairline, the graft number and whether the recipient area will be shaved are agreed.
  2. Preparation: the donor area is shaved, fully or in strips, and both areas are numbed with local anaesthetic.
  3. Extraction: grafts are removed one by one with a micro-punch, exactly as in FUE.
  4. Implantation: grafts are loaded into Choi pens and implanted directly, one by one. Several pens are used in rotation, so DHI needs a larger, well-trained team.

Who is DHI for?

DHI suits patients who want added density between existing hair, a refined hairline or an unshaven recipient area, and it is widely used for women and for small to medium sessions.

It is less suited to very large sessions, because implanting with pens is slower, and to tight budgets, since the extra time and staff often show in the price. The donor limits are the same as for FUE.

What is recovery like after DHI?

Recovery is the same as after FUE: about 2 weeks for the skin and 12 months for the final result. When the recipient area was not shaved, the healing is easier to hide in the first days. Our recovery timeline covers it day by day.

Is DHI better than FUE?

Neither is better in general. DHI gives more control in dense or unshaven areas; FUE is faster for large sessions. The surgeon's experience and who performs each step matter more than the name of the technique.

Does DHI require shaving?

The recipient area often does not need to be shaved. The donor area usually does, fully or in strips, because the grafts are extracted the same way as in FUE.

Is DHI more expensive than FUE?

How many grafts can be implanted with DHI?

Clinics in our database typically quote 2,000 to 4,000 grafts per session, but DHI sessions are often at the lower end because implanting with pens takes longer. Very large cases are sometimes split into two sessions.

Is DHI the same as Sapphire FUE?

No. Sapphire refers to the blades used to open the channels in FUE; DHI does not open channels in advance at all, because the implanter pen makes the incision itself.
